Starting Early with Girls Build LA

Hi! This is Alli from the Hawk Girls Build LA project and I am a 6th grader.

The purpose of our project was to inform our school about STEM and college access but along the way we also wanted to empower and inspire girls to be whoever they want to be. I think that this whole project was very important to not only me but the rest of the school too. I was also hoping that my participation would inspire the sixth graders at my school to try to do things that they normally wouldn't do as sixth graders. I believe my classmates like to be included in these 7th & 8th grade activities so we can start thinking about the future now.
STEM and college access wasn't originally the thing I wanted to try for our project. I originally wanted to to try health and wellness, but after we had started the project I began to love this topic more and more. I believe that as long as at least some students are inspired by our project to go into STEM or try to get into college then we achieved our initial goal.
Finding Meaning to be a student and a leader!

The purpose of hawk girls build la is to show how girls can do anything. The initiative is to try to encourage girls to have an interest in stem. The team is teaching students stem, you can do anything, and and we are having fun by going on field trips. My participation in Girls build LA is important because  I want to help spread the word, “girls can do anything”. Especially when it comes to academics, it is stereotypical to think that only boys are the smart ones. Girls are smart too, they may not show it, but they are. I think some girls are afraid to show that they are smart, They think that their friends or boys are going to make fun of them, but I think when you show how smart you are, it is going to impress them. Some people just aren’t as smart as others and that’s okay, but we want to encourage those individuals to learn stem and be that smart person they always wanted to be!

I am interested in stem because the career path i want to go in, requires experience/ interest in science and math. So when i go to college i will major in those areas of stem. I am interested in college because going to college is important, for many reasons. College helps you get a job you want or a good job. I want to be a dentist or an orthodontist so i will need to go to college. I think we reached our goal based on all of our general meetings and the participation from the other students I assisted the team by playing my role, file management.  I also helped by sharing ideas and helping with the meetings. My recommendation for the future or current girls part of girls build la is to not be afraid to join another club and/or represent Girls Build LA. -Savannah
Always Thinking About How We Can Do Better

Hi my name is Brenley Koepp. I am an 8th grader at Hull Middle School and I am the Co-project Leader in my Girls Build LA group. To me Girls Build LA means working as a team to achieve goals in things we enjoy like STEM. I think that girls need to know all of the stuff there is in STEM and I want to share it through Girls Build LA. to me Math has been my favorite subject and I found out about building and STEM stuff and it really just spoke to me because I enjoy learning more about it. I think that Girls Build LA has helped me learn more about STEM than I realized.

Here at school I think my team has helped middle schoolers learn about STEM and the awesome things you can do. We’ve had some good turnout at our enrichment sessions and general meeting where kids come and learn what we’re doing and what they could potentially do so I think that we have reached our goal of spreading the word. I’ve helped this group and my school by setting up a bridge building activity to learn about building and forces applied to the building. Everyone on the team has helped us reach our goal in some way but no matter what we’ve reached the goal as a group.

Some ways I think we could fix our campaign by spreading the word more to different people and doing some more different type of STEM activities so we can learn a variety of types of options in our future. -Brenley

Hawk Girls Build LA Reflection/Aftermath
Hawk Girls Build LA spoke up to me right before I had participated. I think our group of 10 girls represents leadership, and to be able to accomplish the more difficult things and to come together as a team. My favorite part of our team was the field trips. Being able to ask interesting questions, learn new things, and to be able to cooperate. The Robotics USC field trip was a good one. I probably couldn’t even express how many things I have learned from that field trip. It was crazy to identify that robots can actually help the kids in need of comprehending many different things and from ages 2-5! The ‘’Hidden Figures” field trip at USC was super inspiring. The movie had lots of meaning behind it and allowed me to understand to always focus in the actions you want to achieve.
With all these different things happening in our lovely team, I wanted to be able to stand up for myself and for other girls as well. To be able to compliment other humans on this earth and to be nice to one another. Also to spread positivity along and none of the negativity. With Hawk Girls Build LA, it showed many example of those things. Without the hardwork and dedication that we brought along our success, we wouldn’t have proceeded in the correct manner that we had done. -Deema

What is Hawk Girls Build LA?

The purpose of hawk girls build LA is to encourage girls into the interest of stem, because there are not a lot of girls in engineering we want to encourage them and prove to them that girls can do anything. Most importantly the learning and fun in hawk girls build LA is something very important. Honestly I think that all the positions on this team are very important. Me along with another hawk, have the position of “video”. We ensure that we take pictures and videos of our learning and exploring experiences, soon when we notice that all our hard work on this team has paid off we can look back at these learning and exploring experiences and prove to girls that they can accomplish anything. Overall the 3 years in middle school I have noticed the interest I have in college and stem, I just think that stem is a fun way to learn. Stem is also a big part of your future, which is what brings my attention. My goal on this team is to encourage girls to get involved in stem and prove to them that they can accomplish anything. Our team has several different enrichments of fun activities and they explain how they are involved with stem, meaning to explain the fun in stem, I think that our goal has been reached based on the participation of the other students. At school and on the hawk girls build LA team I have assisted my team by bringing leadership and positivity through the year, and I will continue by working hard because nothing is impossible. My Recommendations would be to not be afraid to get involved in activities, clubs, groups, etc. at school because it will help you in the future or even currently. Keep working hard and never give up because all your hard work will pay off and I'm sure that when it does you will be very proud.
Sincerely,

Deilany M. 8th grade
